The primary goal of the fellowship is to develop clinical and surgical skills in Orthopaedic Sports Medicine. On completion of this fellowship, the surgeon should feel completely ready to evaluate an injured athlete and to perform any indicated open or arthroscopic knee, shoulder, or hip reconstructive procedure with efficiency and confidence. Fellows will gain experience in non-operative orthopaedic sports medicine, and in addition arthroscopic and open small joint surgical treatment. With multiple satellite clinics throughout the northern half of the State, the Fellow will receive exposure to the management of a wide diversity of patient demographics.
The second goal of the Fellowship is to develop leaders in medicine, business, and community. In addition to the didactic Sports Medicine Conference that meets regularly to discuss primary literature and review evidence based practice, a parallel dynamic curriculum has been developed reviewing medical and business literature as well as other publications in an effort to foster leadership skills and emotional intelligence. The purpose of this portion of the Fellowship experience is to create lifelong learners focused on self-development, work-life balance, and sustained professional satisfaction.
A third goal of the Fellowship is to encourage scholarly activity. The completion of a research project is required; involvement in multiple projects is encouraged.
In addition to the above goals, the Taos Orthopaedic Institute Orthopaedic Sports Medicine Fellowship is determined to provide their alumni with an understanding of the business of medicine and, practice management. This unique curriculum will help to prepare the Fellow for the reality of entering the healthcare environment, as it exists today. Drs. Reid, Guttmann and Marvil are strongly committed to helping their fellowship graduates define and then achieve both success and fulfillment in their careers. The fellow will have the specific opportunity to observe and discuss orthopaedic practice management, marketing, and coding. Focused energy will be devoted to helping the fellow select and secure the best opportunity for post-fellowship employment.
